To date, The South Madison Community Foundation has awarded over $1.9 million to students to defray the costs of higher education. The following is a current list of the South Madison Community Foundation Scholarships and the criteria considered in each scholarship selection process.
The deadline for the following scholarships has passed; the scholarship application portal will reopen in 2025.
Arabian Wrestling Club Scholarship
- PHHS senior wrestler who has been active in wrestling for a minimum of two years
- Pursuing a two- or four-year degree at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of at least a 7.0 on a 12.0 grade scale
- Evidence of good character as well as positive leadership potential in wrestling, other activities, and in the community
- Must obtain one reference
Julie Baer ("MamaBear") Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS senior who has participated in at least 2 sports, one of which is Cross Country or Track
- Pursuing a four-year degree in the Medical field at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of at least an 8.0 on a 12.0 grade scale
- Active in church Youth Group and evidence of community volunteerism
- Must obtain two references-church Youth Pastor and Coach
- Must complete an essay "How have your experiences in athletics, church and volunteerism prepared you for life?"
John Broughton Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS senior who has been active in the PHHS football program for two years or more
- Demonstrated leadership and sportsmanship
- Must complete essay (500 words or less) – Describe what football has meant to you and how it has inspired you to pursue post-secondary education.
- Must obtain a football Coach’s reference
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the one page Student Aid Index (SAI) showing aid eligibility
M. Brown Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS senior pursuing a two- or four-year degree in the construction industry at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of “B” or better
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the one page Student Aid Index (SAI) showing aid eligibility
Raymond L. and Anna V. Bulen Scholarship
- PHHS senior who is a member of the Pendleton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
- Evidence of academic excellence, good moral character and good citizenship
- Participation in community and school activities
- Must obtain Pastor’s reference
Kevin Carey Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS senior who has been active in the PHHS cross country and/or track running program(s)
- Demonstrated leadership and sportsmanship
- Evidence of academic achievements
- Participation in community and school activities
- Must complete essay (700 words or less) – “How Running Has Impacted My Life Outside The Sport” (included in application)
- Must obtain Coach’s reference
Brenda J. Cooksey Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS senior pursuing postsecondary vocational training or a two-year associate degree at an accredited institution
- Regular or Core 40 diploma
- Cumulative GPA of 6 or better on a 12-point grading system
- Must obtain one Teacher’s reference
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the one page Student Aid Index (SAI) showing aid eligibility
Bill and June Creed Memorial Scholarship
- LHS senior pursuing a four-year degree in business (including, but not limited to accounting, economics, finance) or language arts (English, foreign language, literature) at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of “B” or better
- Evidence of a strong work ethic and active community service
- Must complete essay (500 words or less) outlining future goals in business or language arts (included in application)
Jim & Marilyn Crosley Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS graduating senior active in any athletic program
- Pursuing a postsecondary degree at an accredited institution
Elizabeth Edmundson Memorial Music Scholarship
- PHHS student pursuing a four-year college degree
- Criteria in order of priority:
- PHHS student who plays piano and will pursue a degree in a music discipline.
- PHHS student who has been a member of band or choir and will pursue a degree in a music discipline.
- PHHS student who has been a member of band or choir and will pursue a degree in education.
- Evidence of volunteer or community service
- Must complete essay (500 words or less) – “How Music Has Impacted My Life” (included in application)
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the one page Student Aid Index (SAI) showing aid eligibility
George H. Fesler, Jr. PHHS FFA Scholarship
- PHHS senior pursuing a degree in Agriculture at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of “B” or better
- Career plans in an agricultural-related field
- Evidence of a strong work ethic and active community service
- Must complete essay (500 words or less) outlining future goals in agriculture (included in application)
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the one page Student Aid Index (SAI) showing aid eligibility
Jennifer C. Fox Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS senior pursuing postsecondary degree at an accredited Indiana public college/university
- Cumulative GPA of between 5.0 and 9.0 on a 12-point scale
- Must emulate Jennifer’s freedom of thought and love of life as evidenced in essay
- Ability to clearly express thoughts and ideas through effective writing
- Academic performance and achievement in liberal arts
- Must complete essay (included in application)
- Must obtain two references: one personal/character and one Teacher’s
Charles L. Godsey Memorial Athletic Scholarship
*Students receiving athletic scholarships are NOT eligible to apply.
- PHHS senior active in the PHHS sports program who has received at least two varsity letters in one or more athletic programs
- Cumulative GPA of 7 or better on a 12-point scale
- Evidence of good mental attitude and work ethic
- Must obtain two references: one personal/character and one Coach’s
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the one page Student Aid Index (SAI) showing aid eligibility
Donald Gwinn Memorial Scholarship
- LHS senior pursuing a four-year degree at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of “B” or better
- Career plans in an agricultural-related or scientific field
- Evidence of a strong work ethic and active community service
- Must complete essay (500 words or less) outlining future goals in agriculture or science (included in application)
Jane Gwinn Memorial Scholarship
- LHS senior pursuing a four-year degree at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
- Career plans in education or consumer sciences (nutrition, textiles, food science, child development)
- Evidence of a strong leadership and community involvement in youth-related organizations
- Must complete essay (500 words or less) "What are some of the key behaviors and actions you took at a time when you were at your personal best as a leader?"
Tyler J. Hatheway Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS senior pursuing a four-year degree at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of “B” or better
- Evidence of consistent, long-term and regular involvement and dedication to their local church; evidence of strong and favorable high character; and evidence of care and concern for others (a “team player”)
- Must complete essay (250 – 500 words) – EITHER "Excluding your immediate family, who in your life has had the most influence on your character and why?" OR “When your life draws to a close, what criteria will you use to measure the successfulness of your life and why?" (included in application)
- Must obtain two references: one Pastor’s and one personal/character or Teacher’s
Jessica D. Henson Memorial Scholarship
- Female active in the Pendleton Jr. Softball Association Program
- Pursuing a postsecondary degree at an accredited institution
- Evidence of church, school and community commitment
- Show academic potential and achievement
- Must complete essay (included in application)

Jack and Helen Hobbs Scholarship
- Fall Creek Township resident
- Predictable success in furthering education as evidenced by essay

Jefferson House Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS senior pursuing a degree at an accredited institution
- Winner will be chosen from the field of current applicants not receiving any other South Madison Community Foundation scholarship
J.K.L. Science Scholarship
- PHHS senior pursuing a four-year degree related to the physical/life sciences at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of 8 or better on a 12-point scale
- Active interest in the study of physical science/life science
- Active participation in extracurricular school and community activities
- Must complete essay (500 words or less) included in application
H. Ross Jackson and Elizabeth S. Jackson Scholarship
- PHHS senior pursuing a four-year degree in education at an accredited Indiana institution
- Cumulative G.P.A. of “B” or better
- Participation in extracurricular activities and community service
- Must obtain one Teacher’s reference
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the one page Student Aid Index (SAI) showing aid eligibility
Kelson L. Lineberry Memorial WEEM Scholarship
- PHHS senior active in WEEM radio program
- Pursuing a postsecondary degree at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of “B” or better
- Participation in extracurricular activities
Jill D. Mollenkopf Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS female senior who has played four continuous years of high school softball, earned a varsity letter at least two of those years and intends to play softball in college
- Pursuing a postsecondary degree at an accredited Indiana institution
- Evidence of school and community commitment
- Participation in extracurricular activities
- Evidence of exemplary leadership characteristics and school spirit
- Must obtain two references: one personal and one Teacher’s
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the one page Student Aid Index (SAI) showing aid eligibility
Sandra A. and Mary E. ‘Beth’ Neese Memorial Scholarship
- LHS senior
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4-point scale
- Priority will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in public service, law or volunteering for organizations such as the Peace Corps or Americorps
- Evidence of leadership through community service and/or extracurricular activities
- Must obtain two references
- Must complete essay (500 words or less) explaining why you think you deserve the scholarship (included in application)
PHHS Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS senior pursuing a postsecondary degree at an accredited institution
- Potential to complete undergraduate studies
- Participation in extracurricular activities and community service
- Exhibit moral character
- Must obtain two references
- Winner will be chosen from the field of current applicants not receiving any other South Madison Community Foundation scholarship
Pendleton Optimist Club Scholarship
- PHHS senior pursuing additional education through vocational/technical training
- Cumulative GPA of “C” or better for a graduating senior
- Participation in extracurricular activities and community service
- Must obtain one Teacher’s reference
Randolph/Fraternal Order of Police Scholarship
- Must have a parent/grandparent who is a member of F.O.P. #48. Include copy of membership card.
- Senior from Anderson, Lapel, Pendleton, Alexandria, Elwood or Frankton High Schools
- Pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the one page Student Aid Index (SAI) showing aid eligibility
Jeremy Rodecap Memorial Scholarship
- Senior of the South Madison Community School Corporation and/or a resident of Fall Creek, Adams or Green Township, Madison County, IN
- Pursuing postsecondary training in the field of Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic OR second choice of education in the Medical Service field
- Training must take place at an accredited institution
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4 point scale (seniors only)
- Evidence of community service and active church affiliation
- Must complete essay (500 words or less) outlining career goals (included in application)
- Must obtain two personal/character references
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the one page Student Aid Index (SAI) showing aid eligibility
Andrew D. Shoup Memorial Scholarship
- Member of the PHHS baseball team
- Pursuing vocational training or college degree at an accredited institution
- Demonstrate exemplary character and citizenship characteristics
- Evidence of a strong work ethic
- Demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball
- Academic aspiration and achievement as indicated by high school records
- Must obtain two references: one personal and one Teacher’s
Howard L. and Elva Fern Simmerman Memorial Scholarship
- PHHS senior or graduate—priority given to PHHS seniors
- Pursuing a four-year education degree at an accredited institution
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher on a 4-point scale
- Evidence of leadership through community service and/or extracurricular activities
- Evidence of work ethic

Fred St. John Memorial Scholarship
- LHS senior pursuing a two- or four-year degree at an accredited institution
