On the 15th anniversary of South Madison Community Foundation’s Open Hearts, Open Purses, members introduced the Heart of Gold Award, a recognition honoring women whose leadership, generosity, and strength make a lasting difference in our community.
The Heart of Gold Award celebrates women who lead with purpose and integrity. These are women who serve others, uplift their neighbors, and inspire change benefitting South Madison County. Some lead with bold, outspoken advocacy, others through steady, behind-the-scenes commitment, but all leave a meaningful mark on the community.
Each year, one honoree is selected, and a grant is awarded in her honor to a nonprofit or community organization she is passionate about, extending her impact and continuing her legacy of service.
The inaugural Heart of Gold honoree in 2024 was Mary Jo Lee, founder of Alternatives, Inc., a domestic violence prevention organization and women’s shelter. In 2025, Betsy Allen was honored for her joyful leadership and dedication to countless community organizations, modeling not only what community leadership looks like, but how it can be shared with enthusiasm and purpose.
Nominations are now open for the 2026 Heart of Gold Honoree. Nominations are open to the public. Nominees must be women who are volunteers, nonprofit leaders, advocates, caregivers, or community members whose time, efforts, or service benefit South Madison County. Self-nominations are not accepted.
We invite you to nominate a woman in our community who leads with compassion, generosity, and a genuine commitment to others. Please include examples of how she serves others, leads with heart, or creates positive change in the community.
Submit your nominee’s name and story by April 15 for consideration.
